COURSE DETAILS
The following is an indication of the
types of course available at Capital School of English.
If you have a specific course requirement which is not
met here, or you would like more information about our
courses, we will be happy to discuss this with you.
General English Course
This course is available
throughout the year and is suitable for all levels.
Entry is flexible and classes can begin any Monday.
The course length is also flexible to cater for both
long-term and short-term students, although the minimum
course duration is 2 weeks.
As with all our courses, all students receive a diagnostic
pre-course assessment prior to placement in order to
determine their language ability and needs.Class sizes
are generally small (maximum 12) to encourage participation
and emphasis is placed on helping students individually.
Courses are based on a popular course book at each level,
although a range of additional materials are used both
to supplement and to consolidate the learning experience.
At all levels of the General English Course the aim
is to help students develop their skills in speaking,
listening, reading and writing, and to enable them to
communicate confidently and effectively in English beyond
the classroom environment. We also recognise that many
students are interested in a range of English exams
(i.e. IELTS, FCE etc.) and we have therefore incorporated
elements of these exams into the General English Course
so that students can either familiarise themselves with
or measure themselves against these exams.
The
most popular courses run in the mornings, from 9.30am
to 12.45pm (including a 15-minute break) from Monday
to Friday. However, we do also run afternoon and evening
courses depending on demand. Afternoon courses run from
1.30pm to 4.30pm and evening classes from 6pm to 8pm.
IELTS
Preparation Course
These
workshops take place two afternoons per week, from 1.30pm
to 3.30pm, and are aimed at both General and Academic
IELTS candidates. The sessions give students the opportunity
to practise each element of the test, as well as offering
strategies on how to approach the test.
English for Executives Course
This
is a highly intensive one-to-one course involving 15
to 25 hours of tuition per week. Students complete a
pre-course assessment on enrolment in order to establish
their specific English language needs and goals. They
receive continuous assessment throughout the programme
and are personally monitored by the Director of Studies.
The School will arrange accommodation in a local hotel
or Guest House or with an executive host family in one
of Edinburgh’s more select residential areas.
Weekend IELTS Preparation Courses
These courses are for students preparing
to sit the IELTS exam, and are supervised by tutors
with particular expertise in IELTS teaching and exam
techniques.Courses take place over 3 consecutive weekends
and involve 8 hours’ teaching per day (i.e. 48
hours’ tuition in total).
If you would like more information on any of these courses,
contact the School and we will be happy to answer any
of your questions.
If you are ready to apply for
one of the courses, please complete the application
form and send by post or fax to the School.
Accommodation can be arranged
by the School if required.
